The Legend

Tyrone "Fly Ty" Govan

An extraordinary drummer, songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist who has shaped the sound of funk, soul, and jazz for over five decades.

As bandleader of "Der Secret," his master creation, Govan has become a cornerstone of Harlem's live music scene. The name "Der Secret" itself speaks to the mystery and magic that happens when this collective of world-class musicians comes together on stage.

"The Secret is in the sound." — Every performance is a journey through the rich tapestry of African American music, from the deep grooves of funk to the sophisticated harmonies of jazz, all delivered with an intensity that leaves audiences breathless.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, as master drummer he contributed to "The Greatest Hits of BTEXPRESS,""Stretch," and "Taking Off," earning a coveted Grammy Award with the group in 1976-1977. His legendary performances during this era included iconic venues like Madison Square Garden, the Beacon Theater, The Funhouse in Greenwich Village, and The Ritz Theatre.

The 1990s broadened Tyrone's repertoire when he contributed to the hit "So Different" with Kinky Foxx, and performed in charitable shows with The Legendary Intruders in Harlem. In the 2000s, he continued to evolve, participating in multiple recordings with Bawner Brothers and as master drummer with Alvin Ailey at the City Center in 2011.

Harlem's Heartbeat

A Living Institution

Today, Fly Ty Govan and his band Der Secret performed regularly at Paris Blues, one of Harlem's most beloved jazz clubs — a cherished institution that closed its doors following the passing of owner Sam Hargress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fly Ty also served as resident musician and drummerman at the historic Cotton Club, which has since closed and is currently in the process of being sold. His deep ties to both legendary venues have cemented his place as a living institution in Harlem's musical heritage — a bridge between the golden era of funk and the contemporary soul movement.

Der Secret represents more than just a band — it's Tyrone Govan's musical vision brought to life, a collective where the drum spotlight is shared among talented members, including Larry Preston, while Tyrone himself commands the electric guitar.

A self-taught musician who has toured the world and played on major records, Tyrone's contributions to the culture run deep, shaping the sound of generations. Together, Der Secret blends soulful vocals and deep grooves that honor the past while pushing the sound boldly forward.
